November 10, 2009- Crime Alert

This Crime Alert is issued in compliance with the Timely Notice provisions of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, a federal statue governing the reporting and disclosure of crimes on college campuses. 

Campus Crime Alerts are issued to warn of possible dangerous conditions on or near the Illinois State University campus.  For a complete listing of Crime Alerts, including full suspect descriptions if available, and the Daily Summary of Illinois State University Police go to the Illinois State University Police website http://www.police.ilstu.edu/ 
 

REPORTED OFFENSE:

On 11-09-09, at approximately 10:48 PM, a female student was exiting her vehicle after parking in the 500 block of S. Fell St, Normal, when an unknown male suspect assaulted and attempted to forcefully push the victim back into her car.  The victim physically defended herself and fled into a nearby apartment building, escaping with a minor injury. 

The suspect was described as a white male, approximately 6’ tall, 200 pounds, brown eyes, dark colored goatee, wearing a black zip up hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and white shoes.

This case is currently under investigation by the Town of Normal Police and other police agencies to identify and apprehend the suspect.  Anyone with information about this case should contact Normal Police at 454-9535.  Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 for tips that lead to the arrest of this offender. Crime Prevention Tips:

-Stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you.

-Keep your keys separate from your purse or backpack.

-Travel in groups and avoid going out alone at night.

-Plan the safest route to your destination; choose well lighted, busy pathways and streets.

-If someone is bothering or harassing you, tell the person in a loud voice to STAY AWAY.

-Carry your cell phone with you and be prepared to call 911 with a suspect description.

-Park in well lighted areas, where your vehicle is visible; avoid parking next to vans or trucks.

-Keep your vehicle locked at all times, even when driving.

-Have your keys ready when you approach your car.  Before getting in, check inside and under your car to make sure no one is hiding.

-If you suspect you are being followed, drive to the police department or a well lit public area and then call the police.

-If a person with a weapon confronts you and wants your vehicle, give it up.  No car is worth being injured or losing your life over.

-If you are a victim or witness, try to remember as many details as possible to help the police.

September 23, 2009- Crime Alert Update

REPORTED OFFENSE:

ISU Police has recently become aware of an incident that occurred near campus, similar to the previous crime alert released on Monday, September 21. 

At approximately 3:00 am, on Saturday, 09-19-09, a small group of 4 to 5 African-American male suspects stopped a student near College and Kingsley Streets and asked for directions.  The suspects assaulted the student by hitting and kicking him before fleeing the scene.  The victim suffered minor injuries and reported the incident to the Normal Police the following day. No other suspect information was provided. 

This case is currently under investigation by the Town of Normal Police Department to identify and apprehend the suspects.  Anyone with information about this case should contact Town of Normal Police at 454-9535.  Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 for tips that lead to the arrest of these offenders. September 21, 2009-Crime Alert

REPORTED OFFENSE:

On 09-21-09, at approximately 3:02 AM, an unidentified small group of male suspects assaulted two students on the quad, near the ISU Center for the Visual Arts.  The suspects fled the scene after taking the victims’ cell phones.  The victims had minor injuries that were treated at the scene. No other suspect information was provided. 

This case is currently under investigation by the Illinois State University Police Department to identify and apprehend the suspects.  Anyone with information about this case should contact ISU Police at 438-8631.  Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 for tips that lead to the arrest of these offenders. Monday, August 31, 2009 @ 3:05pm - UPDATE

On August 31, 2009 Normal Police arrested suspect in connection with the vehicular hijacking that took place in the 200 block of West Locust Street on August 25, 2009. The suspect has been charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated armed robbery, theft of motor vehicle, and aggravated battery, pending review by the McLean County State's Attorney's Office.

REPORTED OFFENSE:

On 08-25-09, at approximately 8:52 PM, an unknown male suspect forcefully entered a student’s car at knife point in the 200 block of W. Locust Street, Normal.  The suspect battered the victim and fled the scene in the victim’s car.  The victim escaped with minor injuries. 

The suspect was described as a white male, age 23 to 29, approximately 5’ 08” to 6’ tall, 180 to 225 pounds, short brown hair, facial stubble, wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.

This case is currently under investigation by the Town of Normal Police and other police agencies to identify and apprehend the suspect.  Anyone with information about this case should contact Normal Police at 454-9535.  Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 for tips that lead to the arrest of this offender. Campus Crime Alerts are issued to warn of possible "dangerous conditions" on or near the Illinois State University campus.

Reported Offense

AT 7:17AM (07:17 hrs) we were notified by a female resident of Cardinal Court that an unknown male entered her apartment through the bedroom window. There was a short struggle and the female escaped through the front door. The male was last seen in the apartment, but was not found in the area when police arrived.

Suspect was described as a Black male about 5’10” with medium skin and short hair. The suspect was wearing a gray hooded shirt with baggy jeans and brown hiking boots.

This case is currently under investigation by the Illinois State University Police Department. The Illinois State University Police Department is collaborating with the Town of Normal Police and other police agencies to identify and apprehend the suspect.

The Illinois State University Police is increasing patrols in residential areas of campus. Students and others are strongly encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, especially at intersections and stop lights.
  • There is safety in numbers! Walk with friends or a in a group.
  • If you are being followed, don't drive home or get out. Drive to the nearest police station or open store for help.
  • Try to note the license number and description of the car and persons following you.
  • Don't advertise. If you are out at night, don't wear expensive or fancy looking jewelry. Carry valuables in a bag.
  • Don't use ATM machines at night. Plan ahead and get your cash during safer times. Use ATM machines that are very visible. Avoid isolated ATM machines.
  • Walk in open, well lit areas.
  • Avoid carrying a purse, if you can.
  • Don't be a hero. It's better to lose your money than your life.
  • If you are a victim of a crime or witness a crime, call the police immediately (911).

Reported Offense

The Normal Police Department took a report of a sexual assault last night Thursday, 12 February 2009 at 11:26PM (23:26hrs). The incident took place in an apartment in the 1200 block of West Hovey Avenue. The perpetrator as unknown to the victim. This incident is under investigation by the Normal Police Department.

Suspect Information: The victim described the suspect as a black male, slender build, 6'00" tall, short dark hair, wearing dark pants and tan jacket.

Crime Prevention Tips:

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, especially at intersections and stop lights.
  • There is safety in numbers! Walk with friends or a in a group.
  • If you are being followed, don't drive home or get out. Drive to the nearest police station or open store for help.
  • Try to note the license number and description of the car and persons following you.
  • List only initials and last name on your mail box.
  • Keep all entrances where you live well-illuminated.
  • Install deadbolt locks and door viewers. Keep doors (and windows) locked at all times.
  • Ask repair/delivery personnel for their ID. Have them wait outside while you call the company for verification. If a stranger asks to use your phone because of an emergency, make the call for them.
  • Do not give personal information (name, address, phone number) to a stranger on the telephone.
  • If someone dials your number "by mistake" do not reveal your correct number.
  • If someone is prowling outside your home, call the police. If someone breaks into your home, try to get out safely. If you can't get out, lock doors between you and the intruder.
  • An attacker expects a passive victim, so if you walk slowly or as if in a daze, you will seem vulnerable. Walk at a steady pace, appear confident and purposeful.
  • Be alert to what's around you. Listen for footsteps and voices nearby. Look around.
  • If you think you are being followed, change your pace. If the person changes his pace to coincide with yours, cross the street, get to lighted areas, and draw attention to yourself.
  • Do not take short cuts through alleys or parking lots. Stay with a group when possible.
  • Never get into a stranger's vehicle, even if your car breaks down.
  • If being forced to enter a vehicle on a city street, your chances of getting help are better there than in a deserted area where the person may plan to take you.
  • Walk in open, well lit areas.
  • If you are a victim of a crime or witness a crime, call the police immediately (9-1-1).

Crime Alert- Sunday, January 18, 2009 @ 3:43PM

Reported Offense

A student was assaulted and robbed on January 8, 2009* on the westbound sidewalk on College Avenue near the underpass at Main and College. The victim received minor injuries when pushed against a cement wall. The suspects escaped with $80.00 to $90.00 in cash.

* The Illinois State University Police Department did not receive information on the assault and robbery until January 16th.

Crime Alert - Tuesday, October 14, 2008 @1:23pm

Robbery occurred Monday, October 13, 2008 at approximately 7:06PM in South Park on the ISU campus. The victim was walking on the sidewalk by South Park when he passed a group of individuals (5 to 6 black males, approximate age 20-25 years). Suddenly the victim heard someone running from behind and turned to see one of the males from the group running at him. A struggle occurred and the victim was battered and valuables were stolen.

Victim advised only one suspect of the group acted while a second suspect stood close by.

Suspects are described as the following:
Suspect #1: Black male, 20-25 years, 5’8" -5'10" height, wearing baggy plain white t-shirt, and dark blue or black denim pants.
Suspect #2: Black male, 20-25 years, wearing a light blue baseball hat.

What to do during a Robbery

  • Try to get a good look at the robber so you can describe him later.
  • Don't be a hero. It's better to lose your money than your life.
  • Give the robber time to leave.
  • Note his direction of travel when he leaves.
  • Try to get a description of his vehicle ONLY if you can do so without exposing yourself to harm

What to do after a Robbery

  • Call the police immediately, ]
  • Do not discuss the details of the robbery with witnesses
  • Ask any witnesses to stay until police arrive. If they can't, get their names, phone numbers and addresses.
  • Do not touch anything that the robber may have touched.
  • Try to recall as much as you can about the robber's appearance, speech and mannerisms. Make notes.

 

Crime Alert- Issued July 7, 2008 @ 3:30pm

The University Police has become aware of an incident of a male from India who was reportedly hit by a black male on June 26, 2008 at or about 11:31pm. This incident occurred on the sidewalk on Northwest side of University High School. The report was taken by the Normal Police Department.
