November 13, 2009 - Crime Alert

This Crime Alert is issued in compliance with the "Timely Notice" provisions of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, a federal statue governing the reporting and disclosure of crimes on college campuses. 

Campus Crime Alerts are issued to warn of possible "dangerous conditions" on or near the Illinois State University campus.  For a complete listing of Crime Alerts, including full suspect descriptions if available, and the Daily Summary of Illinois State University Police go to the Illinois State University Police website http://www.police.ilstu.edu/

REPORTED OFFENSE:

On 11-12-09, at approximately 7:15 PM, a female student was walking near Stevenson Hall on ISU campus, when an unknown subject approached her and attempted to grab her keychain wallet.  The victim screamed and fled to a nearby building to notify the police.

The suspect was described as a M/B, with dark skin, thin build, short hair, wearing a red beanie/knit winter style hat and a gray hooded sweatshirt with unknown lettering on the front.    

This case is currently under investigation by the Illinois State University Police Department.  Anyone with information about this case should contact ISU Police at (309) 438-8631.  Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 for tips that lead to the arrest of this offender. Students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.  ISU Students on Patrol (STOP) is available for safe walking escorts on campus Sunday through Wednesday, from 8pm to 1am; and Thursday through Saturday, 8pm to 3am.  To request an escort, contact ISU Police at (309) 438-8631.   

Crime Prevention Tips:

  • Stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you. 
  • Keep your keys separate from your purse or backpack.
  • Travel in groups and avoid going out alone at night.
  • Plan the safest route to your destination; choose well lighted, busy pathways and streets.
  • If someone is bothering or harassing you, tell the person in a loud voice to “STAY AWAY.”
  • If you’re being followed, cross the street or change directions; keep looking back and get a good description of the person.
  • Carry your cell phone with you and be prepared to call 911 with a suspect description.
  • Use the campus escort (STOP) or Nite Ride services at night.
  • Know where the emergency call boxes are located on campus and learn how to use them.
  • Tell a friend or roommate where you are going and what time you expect to return.
  • Carry your purse close to your body and keep a firm grip on it; carry your wallet in an inside coat pocket or your front pant pocket.
  • Keep your keys separate from your purse or backpack.
  • Don’t overload yourself with bags or packages and avoid wearing shoes that restrict your movements.
  • Walk with a confident stride; keep your head up and look around.
  • If a person with a weapon confronts you and wants your property, give it up.  Nothing you own is worth being injured or losing your life over. 

If you are a victim or witness, try to remember as many details as possible to help the police.

November 10, 2009- Crime Alert

REPORTED OFFENSE:

On 11-09-09, at approximately 10:48 PM, a female student was exiting her vehicle after parking in the 500 block of S. Fell St, Normal, when an unknown male suspect assaulted and attempted to forcefully push the victim back into her car.  The victim physically defended herself and fled into a nearby apartment building, escaping with a minor injury. 

The suspect was described as a white male, approximately 6’ tall, 200 pounds, brown eyes, dark colored goatee, wearing a black zip up hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and white shoes.


This case is currently under investigation by the Town of Normal Police and other police agencies to identify and apprehend the suspect.  Anyone with information about this case should contact Normal Police at 454-9535.  Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 for tips that lead to the arrest of this offender. General Safety Tips

Prevent theft from happening to you.

Lock offices and room doors when you leave them unattended (even for a minute). Do NOT leave valuables in areas that cannot be secured (desks, cabinets, and closets should all be locked). Lock your vehicle doors and roll-up your windows when you exit your vehicle. Do NOT leave valuables in plain site in your vehicle. If possible, place valuables in the trunk of your vehicle. **Report suspicious people in a timely manner to ISU PD**

Reporting Suspicious Behavior

As indicated, a critical factor in preventing acts of violence is identifying symptoms that may serve as warnings to violent behavior. These would include:

  • Person involved in surveillance activities or taking inappropriate photos / videos.
  • Suspicious person loitering.
  • Suspicious person using binoculars or night vision devices.
  • Other personal attributes that might cause reason for further scrutiny:
  • Person acting furtively and suspiciously (e.g. trying not to be noticed).
  • Person departing quickly when seen or approached.
  • Person in place they don't seem to belong.
  • A strong odor coming from a building or a vehicle.
  • An overloaded vehicle or vehicle in an unexpected location.
  • Fluid leaking from a vehicle, other than the engine or gas tank.
  • Person overdressed for the weather.

General Tips for Personal Safety

  • Avoid walking alone at night and attempt to walk on main walkways / illuminated areas.
  • Maintain a constant awareness of your surroundings.
  • Do not prop doors open.
  • Deny strangers access into residence halls.
  • Keep room doors and vehicles locked.
  • Know who is at your door before opening it.
  • Be careful about the information that you share online.
  • Be smart about alcohol and other drugs.

The fall 2009 Campus Crime Report produced in compliance with the Jean Clery Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act is now available online. You may access the new report by clicking here.

 

Bike Registration

 

Free bike registration is available to students, faculty, and staff. Please take advantage of this opportunity. The registration will help us locate the owner in the unfortunate event your bike is stolen. Bike thefts are not uncommon, so make sure you lock your bike to the bike rack by using an adequate cable lock and weave it through the back tire, frame, front tire, and finally the bike rack.

 

Solicitation on Campus

 

Magazine solicitors have been reported on campus and the surrounding areas. Please contact ISU Police immediately if you are approached by a solicitor on campus or in your residence hall.

If possible, give a detailed description of subject(s), what they are selling, how many subject(s) there are, possible names and/ or company name, and location and/ or direction last seen.

Please note the following safety tips:

  • Do not prop doors open.
  • Deny strangers access into residence halls.
  • Keep room doors and vehicles locked.
  • Know who is at your door before opening it.
